Wind Risk Assessment

The Wind Risk Assessment Tool enables detailed analysis of wind patterns and potential operational risks for UAV flights. Users can tailor the assessment by selecting the level of detail (high or low resolution), the city of operation, altitude, wind direction, and the parameter to be visualized, either wind speed or turbulence intensity. By leveraging high-resolution wind simulation datasets, the tool identifies and visualizes areas that may pose risks to flight stability. This allows operators to better anticipate hazardous conditions and enhance operational safety. When combined with the Airflow Trajectory Optimization tool, it supports the identification of optimal flight paths that balance operational efficiency (e.g., increased in-service time) with safety considerations by avoiding areas characterized by high wind speeds or turbulence.

How can this tool create value for its key users?

This question shaped the business impact analysis conducted by Future Needs.

Based on stakeholder input, the primary users of the Wind Risk Assessment tool are UAS operators and smart cities. For UAS operators and service providers, the tool strengthens both operational safety and regulatory readiness. By identifying high-risk wind zones and supporting the selection of optimal flight paths that balance safety and efficiency, operators can enhance service reliability while aligning with evolving regulatory frameworks,  particularly in the context of U-space implementation and increasing levels of autonomous operations. The tool provides the depth of analysis required to support safe, compliant, and scalable drone services. For smart cities, the tool facilitates the responsible integration of advanced air mobility solutions into urban logistics systems by ensuring that safety considerations are embedded into route planning from the outset. Additionally, U-space service providers represent an important beneficiary group, as the tool enables them to enhance their value proposition through data-driven insights that improve safety, operational efficiency, and accessibility across the network.
